Republican debate Round 1: And the winner is…

By James White

Last night was the first of many Republican debates, and it was worth mentioning for several reasons.

Only five candidates showed for the event.  Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, and Gary Johnson were the ones that made the trip to Greenville, South Carolina, and most of these contenders aren’t really considered to be the “heavyweights” of the Republican party.  Most notable by their absences were Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Michelle Bachman (whose performance I was especially looking forward to!).  Another aspect of the contest was that it was hosted by Fox News, which I’m sure is a surprise to everyone that they hosted the first Republican debate.  The best feature of this debate was that it gave the opportunity for candidates to be heard that would otherwise be drowned out during other debates and news cycles.

The First Amendment still exists in eastern North Carolina…for now. The following reports come from WCTI-12.

Phipps Gallows

Phipps' Gallows

Last week, District Attorney Dewey Hudson announced that Lacy Phipps could not be charged with anything for his display of local and state justice officials hanging in effigy in Duplin County.

He has not proven that he was born in the United States, so I will not acknowledge that this person as the president. I am not sure what his real name is.

But, I digress.

Weapons of mass distraction

By William R. Toler

With the current global economic crisis and the heated, upcoming presidential election, one may wonder: is one a distraction for the other, or are they both distractions for something more sinister?

Once we’ve forgotten how the U.S. Congress and Wall Street have flushed the economy down the tubes because a McCain supporter called Obama a terrorist, our attention is again diverted back to the doom and gloom of the economic enigma.

Banking institutions in both the U.S. and around the world are succumbing to nationalization by their governments and foreign acquisitions.

The downward spiral

By William R. Toler

In the past three years, I’ve met two people who have openly discussed and predicted a major collapse of the U.S. economy. One in Craven County…one in Beaufort County.

Some people may call these men crazy…or eccentric. Well, they may be. But they were also right.

Recently the government has bailed out investment bank Bear Stearns, housing lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and insurance giant AIG to the tune of $320 billion.
