Other colleges still smoker friendly

By William R. Toler

Despite Craven Community College’s heavy handed campus-wide smoking ban, there are two local community colleges that are somewhat smoker friendly…for now.

The Jacksonville Daily News reports that Coastal Carolina Community College and Carteret Community College will still allow smoking, albeit in designated areas.

Coastal CCC, in Jacksonville, posted signs that read “Please refrain from smoking” in several areas, such as intersections between buildings, about a year ago to protect those with sensitivities to smoke.

CCC to go smoke-free

By William R. Toler

Officials at Craven Community College gave the greenlight to a campus-wide smoking ban to take effect next fall.

The ban is the result of a survey from earlier this year that found most students and staff favored the action.

However, the Independent Register has learned that the survey may not have been completely legit.

School strip-search in Supreme Court

By William R. Toler

The Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday for a case involving a strip-search of a student.

In 2003, Savana Redding was forced to take off all her clothes by school officials at Safford Middle School. The reason…400 mg ibuprofen.

Redding, an honor student, was called into the office and strip-searched after being named by a fellow student who had been caught with the prescription pills…the equivalent of two Advil tablets.

Branching out

Readers of the Independent Register will soon have a new medium to receive information.

In an effort to combine different media formats,  Managing Editor William R. Toler has decided to start making documentaries. Independent Register films will be a collaboration between the I.R. and Media Blitzkrieg bringing the topics covered by the Independent Register to an audio/visual medium.

The first film will document the 2009 Edenton Tea Party rally with an introduction of the history from the 1774 event.

There is also a series planned to show local violations of constitutional rights. Some of those stories can already be found on this blog.

Keep checking back for more.

A former government official announced today that power grids across the country have been infiltrated by hackers. Intelligence officials are saying these cyberspies are from Russia and China among other places.  Officials also claim that programs installed by the hackers could have devistating effects on a multitude of systems from sewer to financial.

History repeats itself

By William R. Toler

On April 15, a grassroots effort to protest taxation and government spending will be taking place in the form of tea parties all across America.

So far there are 15 Tax Day Tea Parties scheduled in North Carolina. One of those will be historically significant, because it happened 235 years ago.

In 1774, more than fifty women in the colonial capital Edenton signed a pledge to not use East India Tea to show their support for the Bostonians agaisnt British taxation. That event became known in state history as the Edenton Tea Party.

I plan to attend the one in Edenton, rather than the closer one in Morehead City, to document the act of history repeating itself.
