Dog dies for biting deputy

By William R. Toler

A Pitt County dog will die this week for protecting its property.

Earlier this month, Deputy Tim Peadon was responding to a call when he was bitten by a pit bull-german shepard mix. The dog reportedly broke off its chain before attacking the deputy.

The dog’s owner turned it over to animal control officials where it was kept under quarantine for 10 days. Although the dog showed no sign of danger, animal control officals said they would have to put the dog down anyway.

Would the same thing happen to a police dog if it bit a suspect during an apprehension? I seriously doubt it. So, I wonder why a pet has to be euthanised for defending its territory.

This is just one more case for canine nazis to push for “dangerous dog” bans. Several communites in the east have pushed for similar laws following attacks by dogs, mostly pit bulls.

Because of the irresponsiblity of some owners, a whole breed is in jeopardy.

When Newschannel 12 invited viewer feedback on pit bulls after several dog stories, one person responded:

“We love animals, but pit bulls like that ought to be outlawed in this state. And anyone who owns one needs to be put in jail. They’re bred to fight.”

I had a pit bull-golden retriever mix that is one of the most loving dogs I’ve ever been around. He can get a little testy around strangers, but most dogs do…even yappy dogs like chihuahuas and dachsunds…which can bite people. But you don’t see any beagle bans or anti-lhapsa apso laws.

When the city of Havelock wanted to ban pit bulls, I told the mayor and commissinors that they also should ban the most dangerous dog ever breed, the french poodle. Needless to say they did not ban anything.
