I know how you feel. I got a seatbelt ticket while wearing a seatbelt. The cop pulled me over on my way to work, and commenced to harass me for a few minutes before giving me a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.

I told him I had been wearing it since I pulled out of my driveway. He said I had not been wearing it when he passed me, and that he saw me reach back and fasten it. I told him to check his onboard camera. He told me he would not. I called his supervisor, who said with much arrogance that he would review the tape, but that it would not help me with my ticket.

I told him where he can stick his ticket and hung up, but ended up paying the ticket. I'm still furious about that.

The cops name was Walker.

Stop the people, fill out some paper work, kill some time, it is what they do. These people know you and the likes of you (people like me), they look for anything, just to write a ticket, if no ticket, they have filled up their time. Like they are all that busy.
You did not think I would comment??

My advise: Have a small recorder in your front pocket, recording every word said. Tell the checker no ! You have no right to search me or my property. Ask the checker if you are under arrest? Are you detaining me against my will. If they answer yes! Then do not say another word. Use your cell phone, call 911 and report that you have been kidnaped, held against your will. When the police get there, don't argue with them. Show the recorder and play back what was said. And if the police say that your own private property and they have the right to search your bags, politely tell him that by opening the store to the paying public, that nulls that right by the store owner. If the police still insist, ask him if your under arrest. If not then your free to go. Be prepared to go to jail for your rights, there that important to me!

It is the principle of the matter.... You as a customer should not be treated as A thief . Today it is show me your receipt because i said so, Next it will be I am escorting you around the store and watching what you buy. Shopping for Personal Items Is not something I like having to whip out for everone to see. If they fear shoplifting so much to break A Americans right, then they should close and go to online retail. There are Many ways to prevent theft... so dont think for 1 second that "the only way i can prevent theft is you show me your receipt bull***t" you have surveilance, employees walking the floors and of course the Checkout and so on and so on...
you need to understand what is going on before you comment! One day when those Rights you Cherish as an american are completely gone you will look back going how did this happen.

You make a very good point - that the justice system could be more about restitution than some kind of pointless retribution.

In my mind, restitution is about making right what was done wrong. I can run with a wrong-doing having to make restitution, having to fix what was broken or otherwise make right what was wrong to the extent that's possible. I'm not sure that killing a murderer sets anything right. That seems more like retribution than restition. The Viking idea of weir-gilt (which I'm probably misspelling) seems relvant here. If you killed someone, you had to pay that person's family enough to compensate for the lost labor and support the victim would have provided.

I think the case for capital punishment is less about restitution and more about just consequences, or possibly a need to remove an unforgivable criminal. I don't think I particularly subscribe to the latter, but a good case can be made under either concept.
